#36: Then Again, New York’s New York

Dear Friends,

I recently posted a song in praise of Milwaukee actors, so here’s a look at the other side of the coin.  Because there are more stage actors in New York than anywhere, New York’s theatrical infrastructure is unparalleled.  Here’s an email I got today, listing programs available to entertainment professionals New York courtesy of a non-for-profit support organization called the Actor’s Fund:

SCHERMERHORN HOUSE APPLICATION WORKSHOP
Question and Answer Workshops: Review of how to complete the housing application form and documentations required. Financial eligibility criteria: Applicants’ gross income from all sources (employment, benefits, assets and interest) cannot exceed $29,760 and not be less than $18,500. MANAGING CASH FLOW FOR ARTIST
This is a four week workshop where members learn how to organize income and expenses to achieve solvency. The program takes into account the complex and varying nature of entertainment professionals’ financial lives and utilizes techniques for tracking spending, balancing multiple sources of income, and planning for irregular expenses. The group is offered three times a year. The winter, 2008 session begins with a required Orientation on Tuesday, January 15th from 5:30 to 7:30 pm.
The four workshops will follow, from January 22nd through February 12th.

HEALING THE DANCER
An eight-week support group for professional dancers to confidentially and safely address the emotional issues and complexities specific to dancers facing physical problems. The group, co-led by a psychotherapist who is a former dancer and an Actors Fund social worker, begins February 12 through April 1st. A pre-group interview is required.

MONEY AND THE PERFORMING ARTIST
A six-week group that explores how cultural, family and entertainment industry attitudes contribute to how we think about and use money. This group is offered three times a year. To ensure a positive group experience, a pre-group interview is required.

GETTING A GRIP ON PERFORMANCE ANXIETY (For Local 802 members only)
NEW GROUP for Local 802 members! Musicians can often experience some degree of performance anxiety. A moderate level might enhance one’s performance but in its extremity it can be debilitating. This structured group will feature weekly guided exercises and homework assignments designed to help individuals’ learn how to lower anxiety and improve performance. This will be an 8-week group series, meeting on Fridays, February 29 – April 18, 2008. The Group will be held at Local 802, 322 West 48th Street. To ensure a positive group experience an interview and registration are required before attending. Call MAP (Musicians Assistance Program) at 212.397.4802 for interview appointment. In a nonthreatening, supportive environment, group participants will have opportunities to share their experiences and to learn practical techniques for gaining control of “stage fright.”

THE SECOND ACT
NEW GROUP! The Second Act is a peer support group for industry professionals, ages 62-102. Come network and socialize as we share information and resources on a variety of topics. Learn from one another, as well as from guest speakers, while we discuss work and volunteering opportunities, medical and health insurance concerns, financial planning, and other topics of interest. To ensure a positive group experience, a pre-group interview is required.

An eight week confidential group focused on teaching basic tools to help you manage your mood. Unlike traditional talk therapies, this structured group will feature weekly guided exercises and homework assignments with the goal of helping you take control of how you feel. AA Meeting – the green room
12-step A.A. Meeting for those in the entertainment industry and the performing arts. This is a closed discussion meeting. Closed meetings are only for A.A. members and for those with an alcohol or drug problem who have the desire to stop drinking or using drugs.

RESUME Writing
