Taking notes

I got a note that I had too much blood on my face in the final scene.  I took it, but really, too much blood?  On the face?  Is that even possible?*

-SMITE-
* If the 20 minute shower I have to take after the show is any indication, then the answer is actually yes.  But, man, [...]

Say the words

We’re nearing that weird place in the run where we are starting to get used to it enough to make it clockwork.* This is the point at which I generally start to panic, because even though it’s live theater, and I’m doing what I love, blah blah blah, there’s the danger of becoming so [...]

As promised.

So, here’s a little understudy story of my own.* This is a post I wrote for my personal blog back in 2003, when I was still living in New York. I apparently did not believe much in capital letters. The NAC is the National Arts Club: I was the company manager for [...]

Understudy

First, Jeff Withers is O.K. He didn’t seriously re-injure his back — just a severe spasm, which while painful, will ease up. He got muscle relaxants from the hospital, and an acupuncture treatment, and is well on his way to recovery.
Second, we had a student matinee* scheduled for today, so Jeff’s understudy, Matt Pierce, went [...]

The Curse, Redux

This afternoon, at fight call, we were extra careful to make sure there wouldn’t be any more knuckle parries. Because the tech process on this show had been so compressed and chaotic, we had been changing lighting and sound levels on the battle up till opening night. And of course, someone got hurt. [...]

Opening Night

Last night we opened. It’s the culmination of all of the work so far, and the beginning of a lot of work yet to come.
Just like the preview, there were plenty of things that didn’t go quite according to plan.

There were some technical problems in Wales — the sound just [...]

Fear of God

Sorry this post is a little late. There was some amount of unwinding/carousing last night.  Because…
It was our first (and only) preview. We had an audience for the first time, which was great. The audience is a huge part of the theatrical equation, and there’s so much to learn about the show [...]

Dress Tech

We had a pretty successful run tonight.  All the hard work of tech came together, and while there’s plenty more to do, it’s clear that we have a real show on our hands.  I was sitting in the stairwell waiting for an entrance with Todd Denning, who plays the Douglas.  He asked me how I [...]

Dinner Break

We didn’t quite finish it, but we got pretty close to teching the whole show before dinner.  We were all pretty happy, though, to break, because the staff had coordinated a meal for us here in the space.  Sloppy Joes, baked ham, mac ‘n’ cheese, salad, various crudites, and all manner of desserty treats were [...]

Tick Tock

We’ve got approximately two hours to finish teching the show.  It’s possible, but it will be tight.  I’m in every scene from here on out, so no posts till after dinner, I imagine.
